Following a decision by Minister to open schools on a phased basis from 8 March 2021, it was agreed to extend this financial support to 31 March 2021.
Note: You do not need to take any further action - the information you provided in your application will be used to calculate your entitlement up to 31 March 2021.
Who can apply?
You can apply if you:
- have worked as a substitute teacher in Northern Ireland in September, October, November or December 2020
- have lost the opportunity for income as a substitute teacher in Northern Ireland during the period of school closures in January to March 2021 due to COVID-19
- are available to work as a substitute teacher, if required, in January, February and March 2021. (If you are unavailable to work as a result of following PHA advice, you may still apply to the scheme).
Please note – applications will not be accepted from teachers who have previously retired and are in receipt of a teachers’ pension.
How much will you receive?
The scheme has been developed to subsidise the income of substitute teachers to a level of at least 80% of the average earned in the period from September to December 2020.
Payment will be calculated based on 80% of the average days / hours you worked during the period 1 September to 31 December 2020. Payments will be processed through the payroll system for substitute teachers, with the normal tax, national insurance and pension contributions deducted.
Actual days / hours worked, or booked to work, during the period 1 January to 31 March 2021, will be offset against any payment for days / hours through the scheme.
When will payments be made?
The majority of payments will be processed through the DE payroll system. If you are eligible for financial support, you will receive your payment in March / April 2021.
A small number of payments will be processed by Voluntary Grammar Schools and in these cases, the payment date will vary.
