About the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland

The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) is the professional body for teachers in Northern Ireland. It is one of the Department of Education’s Arm’s Length Bodies and is accountable to the Minister for Education and NI Assembly.

Current status

GTCNI’s Council/Board was stood down following an announcement by Minister McIlveen MLA in December 2021. This decision was taken in light of the Baker Tilly Mooney Moore independent Board Effectiveness Review (published in November 2021) which recommended the dissolution of the organisation.

Interim governance arrangements are in place and the organisation and its employees continue to operate under direct DE oversight, ensuring its statutory functions continue to be delivered as fully as possible. The Minister agreed to bring forward legislation to dissolve and replace the organisation and work has begun to consult on what a replacement body may look like.

For more information on the organisation visit the GTCNI website.
