  • School Age Mothers Programme

The aim of the School Age Mothers Programme is to support young women of school age, who are pregnant or parenting, to continue in compulsory education and beyond if this is appropriate.

What to do if you find out you are pregnant

Finding out you are pregnant can often come as a shock. If your pregnancy is unplanned, try to talk to someone as soon as possible.

An Education Welfare Officer can provide you with individual support to meet your educational needs through a regional School Age Mothers programme.

    School Age Mothers’ Programme

The first School Age Mothers (SAM) Project was piloted in 1999 in response to concerns about the needs of pregnant or parenting young women of school age.

The SAM Programme as it stands today evolved out of the Strategy Framework for Education of School Age Mothers.

The aim of the programme is to support young women of school age, who are pregnant or parenting, to continue in compulsory education and beyond if this is appropriate.

    Support Available

The programme is based within the Education Welfare Service, the Education Authority. To find out more visit the Education Authority website:
