Minister commends Dromore primary schools’ charity bicycle initiative

Education Minister Paul Givan has attended a presentation event for Dromore Central Primary School and St Colman’s Primary School, Dromore who are involved in a cross-community bicycle project.
With the support of a local bicycle shop, pupils from both schools have been fixing up used bicycles then donating them to two charities who give them out to local families. The project also teaches the children about bike/road safety and bike maintenance.
Speaking following the event at Dromore Town Hall, Education Minister Paul Givan said: “I was delighted to attend a presentation event for Dromore Central Primary School and St Colman’s Primary School for their fantastic work on this very worthwhile project.
“Supporting shared learning opportunities enables children and young people from different backgrounds to come together and learn with and about each other. I would like to thank the pupils, schools and all those involved for their time and support in making this enterprise a success.”
The project was facilitated by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) with support from the local Policing Community Safety Partnership, Wings, St Vincent de Paul and J R Magill Cycles.
PSNI District Commander, Chief Superintendent Kellie McMillan said: “We’d like to congratulate the pupils for their efforts and thank all those involved in this cross-community project, this has had great community support.
“In addition to these useful skills, the children have also received life-saving road safety advice from our officers and the Policing and Community Safety Partnership.
“This has been a positive example of us engaging well within our neighbourhoods and our thanks to the children who have impressed us all with their enthusiasm, ability and community spirit.”
