Reappointment of members to the NI Council for Integrated Education

The Department of Education has announced the reappointment of two members to the NI Council for Integrated Education (NICIE). Both members have previously served a four-year term on the Board of the NICIE as Department of Education appointed members, with their first term of office ending on 24 February 2020.

The two reappointments are as follows:

Mrs Maeve Marnell is a former solicitor and is currently an Executive Trustee of the charity 'Food for Thought Africa' and an Independent Assessor for the Commissioner for Public Appointments NI. Mrs Marnell will continue to bring to the NICIE Board experience in promoting governance, managing finances including sourcing and allocating funding, setting up a charitable organisation and determining its strategic direction. She also has experience of working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders. 

Dr Anne Marie Telford has previously served as a member of the governing council of the Ulster University, chairing its Strategy and Governance committee. She has also been a council member of the General Dental Council (UK) and the Pharmaceutical Society of NI (the pharmacy regulator) and is currently a trustee of the Friends of the Cancer Centre. She has strategic planning experience as a former executive director with a Health Board. Recently, as Project Director, she secured the long term future of an Emergency Department in a rural hospital with a multi-million pound investment package. 

Mrs Marnell and Dr Telford have both declared that they have not undertaken any political activity during the last five years and do not currently hold any other public appointments.

Notes to editors: 

1. The Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education (NICIE) is a non-departmental public body sponsored and supported by DE under the Education Reform (Northern Ireland) Order 1989.  NICIE’s role is primarily to promote integrated education and to perform a wide range of roles in facilitating the development of integrated education. 
2. The membership of the NICIE Board of Directors consists of a Chairperson and not more than 20 members including four members appointed by DE. The reappointment of two DE nominated members to the Board of NICIE leaves two vacancies and these will be subject to an open public appointments competition at a future date.
3. The reappointments will be effective from 25 February 2020 for a four year term (unless terminated before that time). Members are not remunerated but may claim travel and subsistence allowances.
4. These appointments have been made in accordance with the principles and practices of the Code of Practice of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.  Appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.  However, the Commissioner requires the political activity of appointees to be published.
