The £10.7 million investment will provide GenAI licences for all teaching staff in every school across Northern Ireland. The project is designed to reduce teacher workload, cut unnecessary administrative tasks, improve efficiency and wellbeing, and support innovation in teaching and learning.

    Paul Givan said:

“This is an exciting and significant step forward for education in Northern Ireland, and a clear investment in our teaching profession. The Independent Review of Teacher Workload highlighted the potentially transformative role of generative AI, and I am prioritising this funding to give teachers practical tools that reduce time spent on administrative tasks, support planning and enhance teaching.”

All GenAI licences will be provided through the EdIS managed education technology service, ensuring teachers use AI within a secure and effective environment.

    The Minister continued:

“We know that many teachers are already using publicly available GenAI tools. My priority is ensuring that use is safe, effective, and properly supported.  Alongside access to licences, my department will provide guidance for schools on the safe and effective use of AI. Furthermore, every teacher will receive professional learning to build their knowledge, confidence and skills”

An online learning platform will provide easy access to resources and help encourage schools to share experiences and learn together across the system.

    The Minister concluded:

“This programme represents a significant and practical investment in teachers and in the sustainability of the profession. By giving teachers trusted tools, high‑quality training and clear guidance, we are reducing workload pressures and supporting a modern, professional education system where teachers are empowered to focus on teaching and learning.”
