There are four key stages of a teacher's professional development: initial teacher education (ITE) (which equips aspiring student teachers with the necessary qualifications to become professional educators); induction (which normally takes one school year to complete); early professional development (EPD) (which normally takes two school years to complete); and continued teacher professional learning (TPL) (where teachers routinely reflect on their professional practices and identify opportunities for improvement throughout their careers).
Guidance on Professional Learning
Guidance on the ITE, induction and EPD stages of teacher education can be found in the Teacher Education Partnership Handbook (August 2010 Edition).
* It should be noted that this Handbook is currently under review, and it is expected that an updated version of the Handbook will be published during the 2023/24 academic year. *
