Consultation description
The consultation seeks views on the change to treat children with a statement of special educational needs (SEN) in a mainstream school as supernumerary for the year of admission only, and only if a change of placement is necessary.
In past years children who have a statement of SEN in mainstream schools have been treated as supernumerary at all times. This has served as a simply way of ensuring children with a statement of SEN were able to secure a place at a school which was appropriate to meet their needs.
This proposed policy will allow the Department to remove supernumerary status after the year of admission to a new school. As the system is not currently in a state of readiness to move forward with complete removal of supernumerary status and further work and engagement is required to take this forward, this will be subject to additional consultation at that time.
