The Board of Governors of the majority of Voluntary Grammar schools are due to be reconstituted throughout 2025.

School governors play an important role in the management of a school, alongside the Principal and school staff.

Minister of Education Paul Givan said:

“School governors are volunteers who come from all backgrounds to play a vital role in the running of our schools.

“If you have a strong commitment and a willingness to make a unique difference to young people in your local community, I encourage you to apply to be a school governor.

“You do not need to have formal qualifications to serve as a governor. Volunteers can bring a wide range of skills and experience from their working and personal lives to school Boards of Governors. Being a school governor provides various opportunities to develop new skills.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all those that have previously volunteered to become a school governor. Their commitment, dedication and contribution, has made a positive impact to the greater school community.”

Successful applicants will be expected to take up the post for a four-year term of office.

The Department encourages applications from all sections of the community and previous experience, or formal qualifications are not required. Anyone aged 18 or over can volunteer to become a school governor.

If you are interested in applying to become a Departmental school governor, you can find further information and details on how to apply at https://www.education-ni.gov.uk/articles/school-governor-appointments
