    Date published: 9 June 2015

Education Minister John O'Dowd has approved a development proposal to increase enrolment at St Brigid's Primary School in Glassdrummond, Crossmaglen.

Commenting on the decision, the Minister said:

“I am approving a modified increase to the approved enrolment at St Brigid's Primary School to 198 pupils to increase the school size to the seven class range.

This will provide the school with one classroom for each year group which the sustainable school's policy recognises as the optimum size for a primary school. I am further modifying the development proposal to September 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.”

    Notes to editors:

    1. On 19 May 2014, the Southern Education and Library Board (SELB) published Development Proposal No. 308 which proposed to increase the approved enrolment at St Brigid’s Primary School from 140 pupils to 210 pupils, with effect from 1 September 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter.
    2. St Brigid’s is situated in the townland of Glassdrummond about three miles east of Crossmaglen in South Armagh.  The school had an enrolment of 176 pupils in the 2013/14 school year.
    3. The Department of Education’s ‘Education Works’ campaign promotes the value of education. This year’s campaign aims to ensure that parents have information on schooling and that they are aware of the steps they can take to ‘Get Involved’ and support their teenager in achieving good outcomes at school. Watch out for the ads on television, radio and outdoor locations. The campaign highlights the vital role families can play in helping children do well at school and improve their life chances.
