Education Minister, Peter Weir, has visited Castle Gardens Primary School, Newtownards and congratulated them on becoming an Eco School.
During the visit the Minister met with pupils and staff of the school and had the opportunity to visit the other children centred facilities available on the school site.
He said:
“I am delighted to be here today to have a tour of the school and meet with the young people and staff. The Eco-Schools Programme is the world’s largest environmental education programme and I would like to commend all those involved for their efforts in helping to make the school a greener and more sustainable place.”
Castle Gardens Primary School has a strong history within the town of Newtownards as far back as 1870. The school has established strong links within the local community and has provided quality education for many generations.
The Minister continued:
“I am also pleased to have the opportunity to view the pre-school facilities on offer at Chuckles Pre-School Centre. Early years learning has an extremely positive effect on children’s development and plays a key role in laying the foundations for their future educational success.”
The Minister also visited ‘School’s Out’ a childcare provider which is also located on the school grounds.
Principal Mr Mawhinney said:
“I am delighted that the Education Minister has visited our school today to present the Eco flag. The Eco committee has worked extremely hard raising awareness of the issues that impact on the environment and I congratulate them on their efforts.”
