    Education Minister Paul Givan, has today launched a new call for applications from schools across Northern Ireland to host Research-Informed Conferences during the 2026-27 academic year.

    The initiative is part of the Department’s Making Best Practice, Common Practice Programme, which aims to strengthen the connection between educational research and classroom practice, supporting teachers to access and apply high-quality evidence in ways that improve outcomes for children and young people.

    Schools from all sectors and phases are invited to submit an Expression of Interest. Applications are particularly encouraged from collaborative partnerships of schools such as professional learning communities, Area Learning Communities and Shared Education partnerships.

    Successful applicants will be able to access up to £5,000 to support the planning and delivery of a conference, including expert-led workshops, teacher participation, resources, and follow-up collaboration activities to embed learning in practice.

    Conferences in 2026-7 will focus on

    • Science of learning;
    • Subject-specific learning;
    • Curriculum design;
    • Assessment;
    • Early Years; and
    • Special Educational Needs.

    Welcoming the launch of the applications, Paul Givan said:

    “Research-informed practice is central to improving educational outcomes. These conferences will provide valuable opportunities for teachers and school leaders to engage with evidence, share expertise and strengthen professional learning across the system. By supporting collaboration and innovation, we are helping to ensure that best practice becomes common practice in every classroom. I encourage all schools across Northern Ireland to apply for funding.”

    The programme reflects the Department’s wider commitment to investing in sustained, high-quality professional learning for teachers at all stages of their careers.

    Schools interested in hosting a conference must submit a completed Expression of Interest by 5pm on Monday 8 June 2026, with successful applicants notified ahead of the new academic year.
