The role of the Department
The Department leads a coordinated approach to delivery, working with several organisations to support the development of Integrated Education. Each organisation plays a distinct role, particularly in supporting schools through the transformation process.
Education Authority (EA)
The Education Authority supports school planning and delivery across Northern Ireland and has a statutory duty to encourage, facilitate and support Integrated Education.
In relation to transformation, the EA:
- supports the Development Proposal process, including provision of data and preparation of the Case for Change
- works with schools to develop and implement Transformation Plans
- monitors progress alongside NICIE
- allocates transformation funding on behalf of the Department
Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education (NICIE)
NICIE is the sectoral support body for Integrated Education, funded by the Department. It provides advice, guidance and practical support to schools and communities.
NICIE:
- advises schools, governors and parents on the transformation process
- supports the development of an integrated ethos within schools
- assists with planning and stakeholder engagement
- provides links to the wider Integrated Education network
Controlled Schools Support Council (CSSC)
The Controlled Schools Support Council is the sectoral body for controlled schools, funded by the Department.
CSSC:
- supports controlled schools considering transformation
- provides leadership and ethos development programmes
- represents the controlled sector and contributes to policy development
- is a designated consultee under the Integrated Education Act
Integrated Education Fund (IEF)
The Integrated Education Fund is a charitable organisation that supports the growth of Integrated Education through funding and community engagement.
IEF:
- provides grants to schools exploring or undertaking transformation
- supports parent and community engagement, particularly at early stages
- offers funding throughout the transformation journey and beyond
These organisations work together with the Department to provide coordinated support to schools and communities. This includes guidance, funding, planning support and engagement at each stage of the transformation process.
