  • Minister Weir visits St Joseph’s Primary School, Newcastle to view £2.124million investment

    Date published: 15 June 2016

Education Minister, Peter Weir, has visited St Joseph’s Primary School, Newcastle to view progress on the £2.124million improvement project.

Education Minister, Peter Weir pictured with Christopher McCann, Principal and pupils Corey Gibbs and Eva Murphy from St Joseph’s Primary School, Newcastle to view progress on the £2.124million improvement project.

St Joseph’s Primary School was successful under the School Enhancement Programme (SEP). The project consists of five new build classrooms, a new multi-purpose hall and the refurbishment of the existing school building.

Speaking during the visit, the Minister said:

“I have been very impressed with the progress on the new facilities at St Joseph’s Primary School. The £2.124million investment will benefit the entire school community now and for future generations. This project has been delivered under the School Enhancement Programme which provides schools with much needed new and modern facilities.

“In addition to the improved provision for the school, such investment also provides a boost to the local construction industry.”

The School Enhancement Project (SEP) was announced in 2013 for projects costing between £500,000 and £4,000,000. The programme is targeted to meet the immediate and pressing needs in schools where major capital works are not deemed deliverable.

    School Principal, Christopher McCann said:

“The SEP Programme addressed our immediate accommodation needs. When the project is complete we will have a school which enables our pupils to learn in an environment fit for purpose. I believe SEP funding, particularly in the Primary sector will deliver the change needed to improve the school estate in a cost effective and efficient way.”
